The University of New Hampshire Equine Program is dedicated to making sure our older school horses find excellent retirement homes. The horses listed below are available for adoption. Please make sure to look through our Prospective Adopter Application Form and Lifetime Adoption Agreement. Snap

A horse named Snap

Snap is a sweet boy with a heart of gold.  He has basic dressage training and has also been used in our IHSA flat practices, but he has little experience over poles.  He is a big boy and can be sleepy in the weather, but more energetic in the cold.  He is never naughty and not easily spooked, but he can be wiggly and is quick in cooler temperatures or when he hasn't had regular work.  He would do best with a stronger rider who can help him focus and direct his energy.  He likes attention, but can be pushy in the stable, so again would do best with a handler with some confidence and experience.

Soco

Horse standing

Soco, a petite, 21 year-old spotted saddlehorse gelding, has long been a regular in riding classes and team practices.  He is gentle and exceptionally sweet to handle.  He has worked with riders of all levels, and though he once evented, he has specialized in our lower-level classes in recent years.  He still has some "pep in his step," especially in the cold weather, which can be surprisingly exhilarating for more timid beginners, and he still enjoys a little canter and the occasional crossraill.  However, he is ready for a less active lifestyle with a private owner for light riding and even some trails.

Shamus

Horse standing
Shamus, a 21 year old spotted draft gelding, has specialized in working with our less experienced riders in riding classes and team practices.  He is a big teddy bear, but he can be a little gruff and grumpy, and needs a handler who will give him love and attention and also limits.  He is trail safe and good-sized for larger adult riders, but safe for all levels and sizes of beginners.  He is a bigger boy and a mellow soul, and after years of carrying around his own big body, his jumping days are probably behind him.  He can be grumpy and defensive around other horses, so he needs his personal space and typically wears a red ribbon in his tail when he goes in rail classes.  His little nose gets sunburned in the summer, so he needs an owner who can be sure he has the sunscreen he needs. He is ready to be loved by a single owner who would enjoy a safe, steady partner for light riding.

Aussi

Horse standing

After winning more than $350,000 in harness, Aussi excelled in his "second act" under saddle at UNH.  Level-headed, brave, and forward-thinking, Aussi demonstrated particular talent for dressage, with an expressive and elastic trot and an uphill canter.  He also enjoys hacking on our trails.  He happily settled into his new life on campus, enjoying attention from the students and working enthusiastically in class and practices.  Unfortunately, incomplete healing of a paddock injury has cut short his new career as a school horse.  Aussi is looking for a forever home where he can have a lighter workload.  He not spooky or overly sensitive, but he can be enthusiastic and forward, so he needs a confident rider who is not a beginner.  After his long harness career working with blinkers, Aussi values his personal space under saddle and does not like other horses close to him when he is working.
