I am working with the Penobscot Nation to use acoustic telemetry as a method of tracking Rainbow smelt movements in the Penobscot River, ME. Knowledge about where these fish are located, and for how long, will help to map exposure to mercury and other bioaccumulative toxins which are present in high numbers in the region. This research will allow for better fisheries management and restore indigenous connection to their land and food resources.
