Ava McNamara ’27 is a veterinary technology major with plans to enroll in UNH’s animal science degree program after she earns her degree in veterinary technology. With her associate degree, she will be able to earn her animal science bachelor’s degree with just two more years of study. She is currently president of UNH’s Veterinary Technology Club.
COLSA: Why did you choose UNH?
Ava McNamara: UNH is one of New England's only Division 1 universities offering an accredited veterinary technology program. At first, I hesitated to go to school so close to home. I even considered switching my major for this reason. But, once I toured the facilities and learned about the program's hands-on approach, I had no doubt in my mind. I loved that I could be a part of such an intimate program while also being at a large university.
Here at UNH, the experiences you can have are limitless. Whether it is the homecoming football game chalk throw, joining a club you never thought you would, or meeting peers from diverse backgrounds, there are always ways to enrich your college experience.
COLSA: What is your major and what do you love about it?
Ava: I am a veterinary technology major. I love my major because I can combine my passion for animal welfare and my desire to make a tangible difference in my community. In this major, a vast majority of my learning comes from working closely with animals that seek our medical care. This aspect of my education gives me a sense of fulfillment knowing that I'm working every day to improve the health of animals in need.
COLSA: What's the best academic experience you've had at UNH?
Ava: One of the best academic experiences I've had at UNH is the opportunities we are given as veterinary technology majors to work hands-on with patients. Throughout the semester, we take part in clinical rotations where we can apply what we learn in the classroom to the real world. For these rotations, we went to the New Hampshire SPCA. We help them vaccinate and care for animals to eventually be rehomed, which is a truly rewarding experience. They also have the cutest kittens and puppies ever!
COLSA: What's the best experience you've had at UNH outside the classroom/lab?
Ava: Some of my fondest memories at UNH come from my sorority, Phi Sigma Sigma. At the start of my freshman year, I never saw myself joining Greek life, but I'm so happy I did. I have made so many wonderful connections and met amazing people.
COLSA: How is UNH preparing you to achieve your goals?
Ava: UNH prepares me to achieve my goals by pushing me to strive towards my best self in every aspect of my education. Whether it is the rigorous course work, experience, internships, clinics, or leadership opportunities, this school prepares me for the real world in a variety of ways. My professors and other facilities that I work directly with offer positive mentorship and help me navigate any challenges that I may face.
Lastly, UNH is a well-known and large university that is well known, especially in the veterinary sciences field. This has helped me make connections, which has opened the door for life-changing experiences.
COLSA: What should prospective students know about UNH?
Ava: UNH is a school with so many opportunities. It has a wide variety of majors and so many ways to get involved, such as clubs, sports teams, and Greek life. Don't be afraid to try new things. If you put yourself out there, you will have no trouble finding your home here.
