High-impact and experiential learning
What is the TRAIL network?
The TRAIL Network is COLSA’s centralized hub for hands-on, real-world learning. TRAIL connects students with meaningful experiences that complement classroom learning and help them build skills, confidence, and professional networks. The Network brings together opportunities that already exist across COLSA and makes them easier to discover, navigate, and complete.
Why TRAIL?
Experiential learning helps students connect what they learn in class to real-world challenges. Through TRAIL experiences, students can:
• Gain practical experience before graduation
• Work closely with faculty, professionals, and community partners
• Build skills employers and graduate programs value
• Explore careers and interests through hands-on learninG

Hands-on learning for all COLSA students
Hands-on learning is a defining feature of a COLSA education. Students engage with real systems — from labs and farms to forests, clinics, and communities — and apply what they learn in meaningful ways. The TRAIL Network helps students connect opportunities across disciplines and ensures they are supported throughout the process.
The TRAIL Network is open to all COLSA students. Prospective students will learn how TRAIL experiences fit within their chosen major, while faculty and external partners play a key role in mentoring students and hosting experiences. The vision is that every COLSA student will complete at least one high-impact, substantive TRAIL experience prior to graduation.
