Senior looks ahead to veterinary school and a career helping animals
Rachel Friedland

Rachel Friedland is an equine studies: equine science major from Farmington, Connecticut. With support and guidance from COLSA’s St. Martin Career Exploration Office, she is currently deciding which veterinary school she’d like to attend following her graduation in May, 2019.

COLSA: Looking back on your time at UNH so far, what are you most proud of and why?

Rachel Friedland: Looking back on my time at UNH so far, I am most proud of the amount of knowledge that I have gained over the years. I have continuously pushed myself to take difficult courses in order to advance my knowledge for my future career in veterinary medicine. However, with my difficult course load, I have strived every semester to improve my grades and increase my GPA so that I can reach my full academic potential. Through the help of my professors and my peers I have increased my GPA every semester and know that I am the best student I can be which I am very proud of.

COLSA: What motivates you?

Friedland: My dream of becoming a veterinarian drives me to succeed and motivates me to be the best student and person that I can be. I have wanted to become an equine veterinarian since I was little and I refuse to let anything come in the way of me fulfilling this dream. Saving animals and helping the humans that come with them is something that I am extremely passionate about and look forward to doing on a regular basis when I am a veterinarian. I am also motivated by the amazingly supportive community that I have around me. My family, friends, classmates and professors support me in my dreams and are a huge reason as to why I have been so successful thus far.

UNH has provided me with a supportive and safe environment where I can learn to the best of my ability. The professors that I have been fortunate enough to work with have wanted nothing but for me to succeed, and their passion and motivation has been inspirational. I am so grateful for those who I have met at UNH and every single person has contributed to my success.

COLSA: Why did you choose your major?

Friedland: I chose the equine studies: equine science major because I knew it would give me the necessary experience that would help advance my knowledge for veterinary school. Horses have always been a huge passion of mine and being able to work with them and learn more in-depth about them in my different classes was extremely appealing. Every single member of the equine faculty wants you to succeed and do your best. I loved the feeling of being surrounded by a tight knit family, which is what you get when joining the equine studies major.

COLSA: Any advice for students interested in your major?

Friedland: If you have any interest in the equine field, I would suggest that you give this major a try. There are three different tracks: equine industry and management, therapeutic riding and equine science. All three tracks are exceptional and provide you with the support and course load that you will need to have a successful future. The faculty and students love to talk about the program and help future students so I recommend reaching out to learn more about the program. The road to obtaining your degree in the equine science major might be difficult but in the end it is highly rewarding and you will leave with a great deal of knowledge and experience that you can use in your future career.

COLSA: What are you planning to do after graduation?

Friedland: After graduation, I plan on going to veterinary school to get my doctorate and become and equine veterinarian. I have already received an acceptance to veterinary school and am waiting to hear from a few more. I am unsure as of now what exact path I want to go into in the equine medical field, but I am passionate about both equine ambulatory services as well as equine lameness. I am extremely excited about what the future holds and cannot wait until I have my DVM so that I can help as many animals as possible.

COLSA: How is your experience at UNH preparing you to achieve your goals?

Friedland: UNH has provided me with a supportive and safe environment where I can learn to the best of my ability. The professors that I have been fortunate enough to work with have wanted nothing but for me to succeed, and their passion and motivation has been inspirational. I am so grateful for those who I have met at UNH and every single person has contributed to my success.

COLSA: Finally, tell us one reason you love UNH.

Friedland: I love UNH because it has provided me with a wide range of opportunities that have allowed me to prepare for my future. I love what I am learning, and I know that I will be successful because UNH has made sure that I am fully prepared and ready for the future.
