Madeline Mailhot is a veterinary technology major from New Boston, New Hampshire.

COLSA: Why did you choose UNH?

Madeline Mailhot: I chose UNH because it takes education to the next level. From the committed professors to the hands-on learning, UNH is the place to be. The veterinary technology program offered a unique 2 + 2 option that allows students to earn both an associate and bachelor’s degree in four years. The resources are limitless, I would not want to be anywhere else.

COLSA: What is your major and what do you love about it?

Madeline: I am a senior in the veterinary technology program. I love this program because not only are each of the faculty members dedicated to giving us the highest level of education, but they are also both personable and accessible. The hands-on experiences, internships and bonding between classmates has been remarkable. Many of the faculty are working in the veterinary field, and they have so many stories to share and advice to give. They do all this while ensuring the next generation of technicians are as prepared as possible to be the future of veterinary nursing.

COLSA: What's the best academic experience you've had at UNH?

Madeline: The best academic experience I have had at UNH was any time I got to spend in Dr. Drew Conroy's large animal handling class. He is passionate about what he teaches and working with him and the live animals was unforgettable. I looked forward to this class every week. It truly solidified my calling to veterinary medicine.

COLSA: What's the best experience you've had at UNH outside the classroom/lab?

Madeline: I have been involved in campus groups, all of which have challenged me to be a better student, friend and person of faith. UNH is more than academics; it connects people from all around the country, and I could not imagine being anywhere else.

COLSA: How is UNH preparing you to achieve your goals?

Madeline: UNH has provided me a full experience as a veterinary technology student. Many programs have simulations, while here I have been able to work hands-on, seeing and assessing real domestic animals. I have done physical exams, vaccinations, venipuncture and so much more. I know I will graduate feeling prepared and ready to work. Doors will be open to me due to this broad and diverse education I have had the privilege of experiencing.

COLSA: What should prospective students know about UNH?

Madeline: UNH is a large school with all the resources that come with that, while having smaller school experiences. Student life can be as big as you want, or insular within a small group of like-minded students. The connectivity of the student body despite the size is truly special.

COLSA: Please share one unique or interesting fact about yourself.

Madeline: I am an avid hiker, adventurer and road-tripper. I have been to over 20 national parks, most of which I visited during two coast-to-coast road trips from New Hampshire to California.
