Wide range of opportunities are preparing her for medical school

Lilah Read is a neuroscience and behavior major and nutrition minor who plans to attend medical school.

COLSA: Why did you choose UNH?

Lilah Read: I knew next to nothing about college when I began to think about applying. Every school I had toured had some major thing I did not like, UNH was my last school to tour, and I was really discouraged. Upon walking into the MUB I was handed a list of all the majors UNH offers, and that's the moment I learned a major isn't just a general topic such as science or math.

Neuroscience and behavior was by far the most interesting to me so I went to the department of biological science lecture to learn about the department as a whole while I waited for the NSB lecture to begin. Dean Babbitt completely sold me on how amazing the program was and how much opportunity there is at UNH. There was so many ways to get involved, connect with faculty, do research, study abroad, get a minor, be a part of a strong pre-med program and so much more that UNH was the obvious choice.

COLSA: How is UNH preparing you to achieve your goals?

Lilah: UNH has given me countless opportunities to develop both academically and professionally. On top of having flexibility in being able to satisfy all my major and premed requirements, at UNH I have been able to study abroad, get a nutrition minor, research in two labs and lead a PLTL (Peer Lead Team Learning) group.

Outside of credit hours, UNH has provided ample professional opportunities, some of my favorite include co-founding and being on executive boards of clubs and honor societies, competing in SVIC, and taking a concept a team and I designed in the Sophomore Leadership Network and then actually allowing me to implement it in the NSB major. I feel really confident in my ability to navigate both academia and life much more successfully given UNH has provided such a wide range of opportunities beyond what you would get from lectures alone.

COLSA: Is there anything you think prospective students interested in a professional health graduate program should know about UNH?

Lilah: If you're willing to put in the effort, UNH is an incredible place to make you a well-rounded candidate. Faculty are so supportive and engaged with students making it is very easy to get involved in whatever interests you. Our pre-health advisor is really committed to making sure her students are successful and are on track for whatever best suits their interests and needs.
