My dissertation uses passive acoustic methods to monitor how changes in population are reflected in the soundscape. Specifically, my research focuses on colonial animals that are traditionally difficult to monitor.
I am exploring how we can use acoustic energy to monitor changes in population size at gray bat (Myotis grisescens) colonies in Missouri, USA. In collaboration with the Tern Conservation Program at Shoals Marine Lab, I am investigating how acoustic indices can be used to summarize trends in the soundscape that may be indicative of nest density and breeding phenology in common terns (Sterna hirundo), a species of colonial seabird.
