When Natalie Godfrey ’10 tells current undergraduates not be afraid to challenge themselves, it isn’t a knee-jerk platitude: it’s honest advice that’s reflected in her own life choices, like the time she trained for a half Ironman Triathlon during her residency while also working 80 hours a week. In 2018, she finished the race with her husband, mom and brother.
Natalie Godfrey: I finished medical school in 2014, and just finished my plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. I am now pursuing a hand fellowship with the ultimate goal of practicing a combination of plastic surgery with breast, facial and body reconstruction and hand surgery.
Natalie: UNH helped me focus and identify my interest in medicine and prepared me for the next step into medical school.
Natalie: Jesse Stabile Morrell was my mentor in the nutrition program. She helped guide me through my first experience in clinical research, which was hugely helpful when I pursued further research in medical school, and she was extremely supportive of my goals.
I also participated in the summer nutrition travel abroad course in Italy, which was an amazing experience. I was able to learn and experience the Mediterranean diet firsthand and developed close friendships along the way.
Natalie: I am very proud of my accomplishments in medical school and residency and to now have graduated as a plastic surgeon. It is a long and demanding path, and I learned a lot about myself along the way.
Natalie: Don't be afraid to challenge yourself, you may be surprised at what you can accomplish.
Natalie: Work hard, develop relationships in mentors and friends, don't be afraid to ask for help.
Natalie: College is a fun time in life. I loved being on campus and walking everywhere and made some great friends.
Natalie: I am looking forward to a one-year hand surgery fellowship and then plan to practice plastic and hand surgery in the New England area to be near family and friends.
