Jaclyn Ruhl graduated from UNH in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science: medical laboratory science. Now, she's working at ROCHE Diagnostics in Switzerland.
Jaclyn Ruhl: I currently work in Switzerland for ROCHE Diagnostics as a senior scientist, specializing in product development of digital health products especially hematology digital imaging and AI algorithms.
Jaclyn: Robust clinical knowledge is essential and sets me apart from other people in product development that have little to no clinical background. The robust and rigorous MLS program is comparable to advanced degrees abroad based on my theoretical knowledge.
Jaclyn: Adele Marone [now emeritus]. When I first walked into her office to ask her what MLS was, she planned out the next three years of my life at UNH. She always supported me, even after school. Joyce Stone [now lecturer emerita] for her passion and expertise. Teachers and people like her don’t always exist in our field.
Jaclyn: Working as a traveler med tech brought me to New Mexico, Alaska and Florida and gave me experience in seven different clinical laboratories before joining Roche. I also brought a product through the FDA which was super exciting.
Jaclyn: Take a foreign language and go for the advanced degree when you are young. Study abroad and utilize your network.
Jaclyn: I’ve worked all over the country and UNH has one of the best programs. If you want to work in healthcare without being nurse, the MLS program is a great option.
Jaclyn: The community. Having my friends right up the road at all times.
Jaclyn: Most likely staying in Switzerland and moving into a commercialization role using my master’s degree.
Jaclyn: I have worked in seven different clinical laboratories in the U.S. and now live and work in Switzerland. I also specialize in hematology and hated that subject at UNH.
