Exploring Regenerative Biology Through Newt Lens Research
Jenna Loporcaro '25

Jenna Loporcaro is from Rochester, New Hampshire, and is majoring in Biochemistry, Molecular, and Cellular Biology at the University of New Hampshire. She is presenting her research at the Undergraduate Research Conference (URC).

What is the title of the research that you presented at the Undergraduate Research Conference?

Jenna Loporcaro: The title of my research is Histone Deacetylase Inhibition Represses Lens Regeneration in Iberian Ribbed Newts.

Please summarize your research as simply as possible.

Jenna: In the Sousounis Lab, we study the regeneration process of lenses in newts. My research focuses on enzymes that, when inhibited, result in reduced lens regrowth. This suggests that these enzymes and their associated pathways play a key role in lens regeneration.

What is the challenge/problem your research is looking to solve?

Jenna: Our research aims to better understand the mechanisms of cellular regeneration, with the hope of applying that knowledge to improve medical treatments. Regenerative medicine is a rapidly evolving field, and our work could help scientists understand the underlying factors of tissues and healing and repair.

How has participating in the URC benefited you?

Jenna: Participating in the URC has been an amazing opportunity for personal and professional development. It has improved my ability to communicate complex topics clearly, both in writing and in conversation. I’ve also had the chance to network with faculty and connect with other members of the Sousounis Lab.

Who has worked with you on your research?

Jenna: This research would not have been possible without the guidance of Dr. Konstantinos Sousounis and the support of my fellow lab members—Olivia Williams, Kelsey Ahearn, Nicole Farber, Disha Hegde, Brooklyn Wallace, Jacob Nipoti, Leo Napoleon, Tim Ralich, Kaylee Shipps, Damien Mann, Sophie Hodge, and Isabelle Creto.

Have you received any funding to support your research? If so, please describe.

Jenna: Last summer, I received a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF USA) through the Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research.
