Can I stay on track to graduate in 4 years if I start off Undeclared?
- Yes! During the first year, COLSA Undeclared students are enrolled in the same classes as most of our declared majors (Biology, Chemistry, Calculus). This keeps you on track and ensures a smooth transition once a major is declared.
What does advising look like for Undeclared students in COLSA?
- Students are advised by a professional advisor in the Academic Affairs Office until they declare a major, at which time they are transitioned to a faculty advisor in their chosen program of study.
- While Undeclared, students will be enrolled in an exploratory Freshman Seminar Course that will expose them to all of the programs COLSA has to offer. Peer advisors will help facilitate the transition to college and advise Undeclared students on general University academic processes.
How will I get help selecting a major?
- In addition to learning about our majors in the Freshmen Seminar, students will meet with an advisor regularly to discuss their interests and skills as they relate to COLSA programs of study.
- Faculty and students in COLSA departments are available to discuss specific program curriculum, research opportunities, and career paths.
- Students can meet with a career advisor in the St. Martin Career Exploration Office to help explore their interests and skills as they relate to academic options.
How can I learn about COLSA majors as they relate to potential careers?
- The St. Martin Career Exploration Office offers students many opportunities to explore career paths and ways to get involved, including workshops and 1:1 meetings with career advisors.
- Faculty Program Coordinators are available to meet with students to discuss potential career paths.
When do I need to declare a major?
- Students have until Spring Sophomore year to declare a major.
Is it easy to change my major?
- Changing majors is a common occurrence, even among students admitted as a declared major. In most cases, it is a simple process to change your major. Students must meet the declaration requirements of a specific major to transfer internally.
Can I study abroad as an Undeclared student?
- No. You must have a declared major to study abroad.
Can I work with faculty in their research labs as an Undeclared student?
- Yes. Students can reach out to faculty to discuss research opportunities.
