The UNH Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program is a PATH International (formerly known as NARHA) Premier Accredited Operating Center. PATH was founded in 1969 to promote and support therapeutic riding in the U.S. and Canada. More than 600 therapeutic riding centers in North America are members of PATH. As a member of PATH International's higher education division, our staff is educated to PATH standards and our instructors are certified. Our program and instructors are also insured in accordance with these standards.
In addition, we offer two courses specific to therapeutic riding. In the fall we offer ANSC 500 (Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies), which is a prerequisite to our spring course, ANSC643 (Principles of Therapeutic Riding Instruction). In this class, students test for their instructor certification through PATH International's higher education program and do not go through the typical registered instructor certification process. Although these courses are part of our four-year degree program, they may be taken as continuing-education classes or as part of an equine minor.
