Research Topic: Aquatic nitrogen processing in small reservoirs during storm events
Nitrate (NO3-) in excess poses a threat to aquatic ecosystems by altering biological processes, leading to eutrophication, algal blooms, and habitat loss in downstream freshwater, estuarine and coastal marine habitats. Reservoirs can attenuate nitrate, but questions remain on the effect of storm events on nitrate removal in reservoirs. Unlike channelized systems, reservoir biogeochemistry responds to storm events on both spatial and temporal scales. I study where, when, and how nitrogen is being processed in small reservoirs.
