WHONDRS Global River Image Network Participation

Tuesday - July 14th -  2026, 11:30am

Summary:

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is inviting people to participate in the WHONDRS Global River Image Network, a distributed science effort collecting river shoreline photos from around the world. Participants would need to visit a river or stream, take a few photos, then upload them with some information about the site. The river can be wet or dry; small or big. You can find the protocol here

These photos will be used to build a global dataset for AI-enabled measurements of sediment grain size and surface topography to support predictions of water quality and water movement at river-groundwater interfaces.

Contributions may be submitted until December 1, 2026. You do not need to be a domain expert to participate, you just simply need access to a river site. Participants can also choose if they would like to be included as a co-author on the published dataset.

If you have any additional questions please reach out to WHONDRS@pnnl.gov.
