(Food Systems Science, Human Nutrition, and Crop Physiology)

The Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems (ANFS) within the University of New Hampshire’s College of Life Sciences and Agriculture (COLSA) invites applications for three tenure-track positions focused on the interrelated human and agroecological aspects of our food system.  Specifically for this cluster, we seek candidates with demonstrated teaching and research expertise in either (1) Food systems science, (2) Human nutrition, or (3) Crop physiology. The anticipated start date for all three hires is August 20, 2018.
(1) Assistant Professor of Food Systems Science: We seek candidates from the life sciences, economics, or interdisciplinary physical or social sciences with demonstrated expertise in applied analysis of one or more aspects of human-agroecological food systems. The applicant’s research should address the complexity inherent in food systems through direct consideration of some of the relationships and trade-offs among agricultural productivity, economic viability, ecological impact, human health, policy, and food security. We especially welcome applicants whose research has potential application to the food systems of the northeastern United States, with its unique patterns of land use, rural-urban composition, and demographics. Ideally, applicants will apply their research on food systems sustainability to local, regional, national, and/or global challenges using interdisciplinary approaches. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate-level food systems courses.
(2) Assistant or Associate Professor of Human Nutrition: We seek candidates with demonstrated teaching proficiency and research interest in the impacts of food production, access, consumption, and/or policy on health. The successful candidate will bring research expertise in assessing such impacts through human intervention studies, metabolic analysis, metabolomics, behavioral analysis, and/or environmental assessment. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses in nutrition education, behavioral nutrition, and/or courses specific to the candidate’s interests.
(3) Assistant Professor of Crop Physiology: We seek candidates with demonstrated expertise in plant metabolomics, plant-substrate-environment relationships, crop response to abiotic and biotic stresses, and/or postharvest physiology. Crop species of interest could be horticultural (fruits, vegetables, ornamentals), agronomic (grains, forages), or others (biofuel, cover crops). Ideally, applicants will have experience with, or very strong interest in, applying their research to enhancing crop nutritive value and/or addressing regionally-specific challenges to crop production. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in crop physiology. 

For all three positions, the hired candidates are expected to develop productive, internationallyrecognized, and externally-funded research programs that work collaboratively across disciplines. They are also expected to provide excellent training for our graduate students and to develop and teach innovative courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Undergraduate education, including provision of directed research opportunities, is an area of distinction that will be strengthened through these positions.
Qualifications: The successful candidate for each of the three positions will: 1) Hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline and have a demonstrated interest in integrating across multiple dimensions of the food system; 2) Have a record of significant scholarly research that aligns with the position description and complements existing expertise within the department and college; 3) Demonstrate excellent potential in teaching and mentoring of our graduate and undergraduate students; 4) Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills; and 5) Understand and appreciate the integrated teaching, research, and service components of UNH’s land-grant mission and the transdisciplinary alignment of agriculture, nutrition, and food systems science in higher education.

The ANFS Department currently serves 428 undergraduate majors through its Animal Science, Nutrition, Equine Studies, and Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems programs, as well as 25 graduate students and interns through a variety of departmental and college-wide programs. Current faculty research areas include animal and plant production, plant breeding and applied genomics, plant pathology, dairy cattle nutrition, and human nutrition. ANFS is one of five academic units within COLSA, which also includes the state’s Agriculture Experiment Station. The college has experienced significant growth in interdisciplinary life sciences fields over the past five years, including recruitment of new faculty and increased undergraduate and graduate enrollments. Relevant college facilities include the Hubbard Center for Genome Studies, the Woodman and Kingman Agricultural Research Farms, the Fairchild Dairy Teaching and Research Center, the Organic Dairy Research Farm, the Macfarlane Greenhouses, the Lou & Lutza Smith Equine Center, and the Nutrition Assessment and Simulation Laboratory.
