Environmental and genetic signals of behavioral plasticity and social evolution

Although advanced eusocial species like the honey bee are globally ubiquitous, the evolutionary origins of their highly complex behavior remain mysterious. The socially diverse small carpenter bees (Ceratina) demonstrate behaviors considered strongly antecedent to eusociality. My research thus applies behavioral ecology and sociogenomic methods within Ceratina to gain insights into the molecular signals of social evolution.
