- First year students, ideally, should take English 401 when their sport is not in season.
- Students should schedule classes around practice times whenever possible.
- Students should schedule more difficult and time-consuming classes when the sport is not in season, if their major allows.
- Students should be encouraged to have a balance in their class schedules between heavy reading classes, labs, etc.
- Students must discuss with their professors at the beginning of each semester whether the professors will excuse them from classes for an athletic competition.
- Athletes who drop classes must check with the eligibility officer in athletics because students need to achieve a certain number of credits each semester to retain their eligibility.
- Student athletes must declare a major before they begin their fifth semester of enrollment.
Student-Athlete Support Services Coordinator
If a student-athlete is having academic difficulty, you might strongly suggest that he or she meet with Joanne Maldari, the student-athlete support services coordinator. The office is in the Field House, 2-0283. The coordinator is responsible for coordinating support services for student-athletes and monitoring their progress relating to University standards and NCAA eligibility requirements, a service mandated by the NCAA. The coordinator can work with instructors to determine what services are appropriate for the student (Center for Academic Resources, Access, Health Services, academic advisors). The coordinator is also responsible for organizing tutorial services for student athletes experiencing academic difficulty. Both group and individual tutoring can be arranged either by the recommendation of faculty or the students themselves.
